Goodness is about what you do.
Not who you pray to.
~ Terry Pratchett ~
If you care about what other people think;
you will always be their prisoner.
~Lao Tzu~
Heaven goes by favor. If it went by merit,
you would stay out and your dog would go in.
~ Mark Twain ~
I am quite sure now that often, very often,
in matters concerning religion and politics
a man's reasoning powers are not above the monkey's.
~ Mark Twain ~
Anyone who thinks sitting in church
can make you a Christian must also think
that sitting in a garage can make you a car.
~ Garrison Keillor ~
I was greatly interested in the incident of Eve and the serpent,
~ Mark Twain ~
.
The idea that God is an oversized white male with a flowing beard
who sits in the sky and tallies the fall of every sparrow is ludicrous.
But if by God one means the set of physical laws that govern the universe,
then clearly there is such a God.
This God is emotionally unsatisfying...
it does not make much sense to pray to the law of gravity.
~ Carl Sagan ~
There are people who believe that humans and dinosaurs co-existed,
that they roamed the Earth at the same time.
There are museums that children go to,
in which they build dioramas to show them this.
And what this is, purely and simply, is a clinical psychotic reaction.
They are crazy. They are stone-cold-f*ck nuts.
I can't be kind about this, because these people
are watching The Flinstones as if it were a documentary.
~ Lewis Black ~
Sunday school: A prison in which children do penance
for the evil conscience of their parents.
~ H.L. Mencken ~
How we behave toward cats here below
determines our status in heaven.
Almost any sect, cult, or religion
will legislate its creed into law
if it acquires the political power.
There is but one honest limit to the rights of a sentient being;
it is where they touch the rights of another sentient being.
Everything human is pathetic.
The secret source of humor itself is not joy but sorrow.
There is no humor in heaven.
~ Pudd'nhead Wilson's New Calendar~
It ain't those parts of the Bible
that I can't understand that bother me,
it is the parts that I do understand.
~ Mark Twain ~
Remember, all I am trying to establish for the moment is that we do not,
as a matter of fact, derive our morals from scripture.
Or, if we do, we pick and choose among the scriptures
for the nice bits and reject the nasty.
But then we must have some independent criterion
for deciding which are the moral bits:
a criterion which, wherever it comes from,
cannot come from scripture itself
and is presumably available to all of us
whether we are religious or not.
