Males live for exactly eleven-and-a-half months, dying from stress-induced immune system breakdown about two weeks after mating. Females, especially from larger species, may live longer, with around 30 to 50 per cent raising two litters, while only ten per cent of females from smaller species live long enough to breed again. Hibernating during the winter months the bear knows instinctively the times to be quiet and the times to be active. (When a large herd of deer move during the day-they will be in sight of each other, yet spread out. As night falls the deer will form into single file, nose to tail and move together by following the white tail that is in front of them. So, trust your instincts to lead you, yet know when it is time to follow.)
The deer is linked to the arts, specifically poetry and music in ancient Celtic animal lore due to its graceful form. There are two aspects of deer - female (the Hind) and male (the Stag: see below) . The Hind (the red female deer), symbolizes femininity, subtlety and gracefulness. The Hind is believed to be associated with the Faery realm, tempting us to release the material trappings of so-called 'civilization', to go deep into the forest of magic, to explore our own magical and spiritual nature. Many stories tell of Hinds changing into women, often goddesses, to protect does from being hunted. The lesson to be gleaned here is that when we explore magic and spirituality, it must be with good intention, to harm no living being, but to enter the realm of the wild things in the spirit of love and communion. Both Celts and American Indians prayed to the deer to give them a good hunt, and in return promised to take no more than was essential for the survival of the tribe. This helps remind us that our spirit of gentleness and unconditional love should extend to all species, not only our own. They also knew the deer to be savvy when it came to finding the best herbs. These earth-bound peoples would follow the deer to prime herb patches - many of which proved to be highly beneficial in their medicinal purposes. American Indian Totem Animal for "Gemini"
Most people know, from popular literature of the importance of the bison or buffalo to the daily existence American Indian peoples, but the more common and useful,,animal was the deer. While the buffalo provided meat and heavy robes to help sustain life they were mainly limited to the tribal lands of the Plains Indians. The more universally found deer provided a cornucopia of items to the hunter. Besides the good meat and strong skins an amazing number tools came from the deer. The lower leg bone, for example, has been called by some nature's Swiss Army Knife. The thick and sturdy bone can be used for an almost unlimited number of tools. These include knife handles, hide scraping tools, hairpins, fishhooks, games, flutes, decorations and sewing needles. The deer in fact provides an entire sewing kit with bone awl and sewing needles and sinew for thread. The deer was, to the ancient peoples, a true gift from the Creator.

Dingo helps us to maintain monogamy despite disloyalty, partnership in the face of great conflict, and a cohesive family dynamic despite any internal rivalries. (see: “Aboriginal Dog” under “Dog”)
Dog (general) -- The dog’s medicine is loyalty, reliability, nobleness, trustworthiness, unconditional love, friendship, fierce energy of protection and service. Dog was the servant/soldier that guarded the tribe's dwellings and protected them from surprise attacks. Dogs are the sacred familiars of Hecate the Goddess who defends the soul's right to wander in these little-known, oft-misunderstood paths and they are guardians to the Underworld. Hecate and her hounds will also speak for (and protect) those who cannot do so for themselves. Hecate and her dogs are protectors of those who cannot defend themselves: babies, children, the meek, the mad and the unjustly maligned. In Chinese symbolism, dogs are also considered a harbinger of friendship and a guardian of sacred spaces. A study of the breed and its purpose will help to define the energy it represents.
Difficulties exist when looking to the domestic dog as an Animal Totem. Most have been bred-to produce some-accented appearance or behavior, thus creating a genetically muddled animal. Many of these dogs are mentally and spiritually "confused" about their identity as they may be trapped somewhere between their original nature and their artificially bred persona. Be aware that often times these animals may feel "lost" and be looking to you for guidance. When a sheep dog has been bred, generation after generation, to herd sheep and it finds itself living in a city apartment, it may feel misplaced and without a purpose. It may want and need your help to find a job it can do to give its life meaning.
Donkey -- Donkey is symbolic of versatility, intelligence, eager worker, determination, stubbornness, spiritual dedication, undying faith in the creative force, willingness to take onboard the responsibilities and burdens of others (beast of burden). The fox lives in the "In-between Time" on the edge of dusk and dawn and can guide the way into the Spiritual Realm. There are many species of fox, but they all share the cleverness and cunning from which comes the expression, "sly as a fox." For the fox learning to be invisible is an important skill in life. The fox shows how to develop the arts of camouflage, invisibility, and shape shifting. The fox teaches how to be unpredictable by mastering the ability of blending unseen into the surroundings. A creature of the night it is imbued with supernatural powers and is a totem of healing of body, mind and spirit. A basic lesson fox offers is to stay clear of complications, rather than getting involved in controversies, step back and observe differences from a distance. They are intelligent, communicative, social and affectionate animals, capable of a wide variety of vocalizations and physical expressions to convey their state of being. They are adept problem solversThe guinea pig is a healer and this is one of the reasons that it has become a popular pet in the West. Mayan shamans used the guinea pig as a diagnostic tool. The guinea pig would crawl over the patient and then tell the shaman what the illness was. (Today's 'modern medicine'' uses them as test subjects so often that it is now in the vernacular to consider someone a 'guinea pig' if they have been experimented on.) The hare is more solitary and tougher than the rabbit. Hares don’t live in warrens or have maternity nests like rabbits do for raing their young. The young hares are born so well-developed that they can fend for themselves within a few hours of their birth. The hare is associated with a number of myths from many different cultures. Hares are most famous for are their boxing matches. This has long been thought to be competitions of prowess amongst male hares like the fights that go on between other competing male animals, but observation has shown that most of the time, it is usually a male and a female hare that take to boxing one another. It has been suggested that the female is testing the fitness of the male before she decides to have him as her mate and that boxing his ears is a good way of telling him to bugger off! Also, from a metaphorical stance, the Equinoxes are a time of balance, between night and day, as well as masculine and feminine. The male and female hares boxing simply perpetuates this idea of balance at the Spring Equinox. American Indians honored the Great Hare (jackrabbit) as a creature who had a role in the creation of the world. The Egyptians also saw the hare involved in a creation story. For them, the hare came to mean procreation, and then immorality. While the hare is often associated with impatience and haste (like the “Tortoise and the Hare” fable), it’s important to note that other cultures saw the hare as fleet and swift, and symbols of diligence. Hare energy is sensitive and artistic, and also linked with ambition, fitness, and virtue. However, the hare is not just associated with positive things. Hares are also thought of as greedy and selfish, even a bad example for people. Hare is seen as a jokester, linked with trickery and fraud. Even those with hare medicine are clever, often unreliable, and frequently thinking of themselves. Because they move in leaping and hopping motions, those with rabbit and hare totems can expect changes in their own lives by attuning to lunar cycles and the tides.

Communication is important to the hyena and it teaches the need to choose words carefully. The hyena knows its power for success lies within the group. (Many cultures, including those in Africa, have historically viewed the hyena negatively, associating them with gluttony, uncleanliness and cowardice. Part of their bad reputation comes from the hyena's tendency to scavenge graves for food. They are one of the few creatures naturally suited for this, due to their ability to devour and digest every part of a carcass, including bone.)
